My typewriter used to have a standard keyboard, with the letters arranged as follows:
Row l: Q W E R T Y U I O P
Row2: A S D F G H J K L
Row3: Z X C V B N M.
I lent the machine to a friend, and when it came back I found that the positions of the letters had been altered into what he claimed was a more efficient layout. None of the letters was in its original row, though the numbers of letters in each row remained the same. I tested the new layout by typing various words connected with my business--I run a liquor department in a supermarket in London. The numbers in parentheses below show the number of rows I had to use to produce each word:
BEER (1)
STOUT(l)
SHERRY (2)
WHISKEY (3)
HOCK (2)
LAGER (2)
VODKA (2)
CAMPARI (2)
CIDER (3)
SQUASH (2, but would have been I but for a single letter)
FLAGON (2)
MUZZY (2).
The next word I tried was CHAMBERTIN. Which rows, in order, did I use?
