A man sits on a buoy floating in a swimming pool. In his right hand is a glass containing an ice cube. If he throws the ice cube into the swimming pool, when will the water level rise?
·When the cube falls into the water?
·Or not until the cube is completely melted?

THE SOLUTION

The water level remains constant throughout the experiment. When the ice cube is in the glass, thus floating with the man and the buoy on the water, it displaces its weight of water. When it falls in the pool it floats again, and still displaces its weight of water. When it melts it displaces its volume of water. Since it is ice, the volume of water corresponding to its weight is equal to its volume.
